IAC ‘World Suicide Prevention Day’ statement

The Indian Action Committee (IAC) is pleased to be associated with the global observance of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, 2016 under the theme ‘Connect, Communicate, Care’.

The IAC since its establishment in 2003 has focused on suicide prevention as part of its social work programs predominantly in the Indo- Guyanese community.

Given the spate of suicide related deaths over the past two years, the IAC made a national call for suicide to be declared a national priority. This is believes would bring the necessary focus and resources to help realize the desired results through education and other related interventions. The organization believes that while the declaration hasn’t been realized, it is still profoundly useful.

The IAC supports the efforts of the Government of Guyana, the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s), religious bodies, trade unions and civil society to mitigate this societal evil which has devastating effect.

The IAC takes this opportunity to commend all who continue to work to reduce suicides and hopes that the national interventions needed would be forthcoming.
