IAC Message on Guyana’s 51st Republic Anniversary

The Indian Action Committee (IAC), in recognition of the 51st Anniversary of Guyana having achieved republican status on 23rd February 1970, is calling upon all Guyanese citizens, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which is still threatening the health of the population of the country, to observe this day in a safe and considerate manner given the fact that many persons will be consuming alcohol in large quantities.

The IAC further calls upon all drivers who are involved in enjoying the national holiday to observe the basic rule of not drinking and driving.

The IAC recognizes that the date itself is linked to the Berbice uprising of enslaved persons of African origin, which allowed the then Dutch colony of Berbice to be administered by the temporarily freed slaves for a period of one year between 1763 and 1764.

The IAC, in light of the recent struggle for the upholding of democracy in Guyana, calls upon the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic Government to continue its positive work in rebuilding the economic foundation of the country which had deteriorated since May 2015.

The IAC is very hopeful that the people of Guyana will benefit in the near future from new legislation which is being passed under President Ali’s administration, especially with respect to the relatively new oil and gas industry.

The IAC understands that throughout 2021 the country will experience massive developments in sea defense and infrastructure, housing and water, agriculture and the hospitality sector, all of which will result in economic development and improvement in the lives of the ordinary people.

The IAC joins with the political parties, religious bodies, trade unions and other civil society groups in the call for peace and lasting national unity in the drive towards economic development and prosperity.

The IAC wishes all Guyanese a Happy 51st Republic Anniversary.
